Caines Head State Recreation Area is the scenic site of an abandoned World War II fort- Fort McGilvray. This was built to protect the Port of Seward from Japanese attacks. The 4.5-mile coastal trail leads from Lowell Point to the recreation area, ending at North Beach. A portion of the trail can only be hiked at low tide so you will need to check the tide table for that day. The end of the trail allows sweeping views of Resurrection Bay and remnants of old military constructs including bunkers and turret gun installations. Campsites and bathrooms along the trail for overnight stays which is highly recommended. Activities include fishing, hiking, beachcombing, wildlife viewing, camping, and photography.
